Grand Ole Opry
Eddie Hill - WSM DJ & singer - mid to late 50's
Here is my Eddie Hill story. Eddie hosted a late night DJ show on WSM and occasionally sang on the Opry. His famous saying on the radio late at night was "Well squall and ball and shimmy up the wall and good mornin' youins' all." I use to call him a lot from St.Louis when he was on the air. I've got a tape of several of the calls, one of which I was telling him about John Harford and the Missouri Ridge Runners. I'll attach the audio of it to this photo when I get the tape transcribed. One Friday night I was sitting with him in the WSM studio he broadcast from and I remember two other visitors stopped in to chat for awhile. The visitors were Audrey Williams and Stonewall Jackson. Another night I stayed visited with him at the WSM studio, I asked him if he knew anywhere that I might find an old Roy Acuff record on the Vocallian label. I collect old Acuff records and figured I wouldn't ever stand a chance of picking up an Acuff Vocallian. He spun up a song and said, wait here a minute, I'll be right back. He went to the music library and came back with Roy Acuff singing The Great Speckled Bird on Vocallian and gave it to me. I was overwhelmed to say the least. That record is still one of my prized possessions.
