Doc Watson - Steelville, Missouri - October 14, 2006

Ok. Here's the story on this clip. This is the beginning of the set and Monty, the sound engineer let me plug into the soundboard. I realized right away that I was not going to be successful taping from my seat near the back of the room without adjusting my camcorder much higher. There were a few people in back of me and I thought I would disturb their view. I decided to move to the back of the room, right against the back wall. This was still plenty close enough to have a good view and to tape from but I didn't want to take a chance that someone might trip on the audio cable so I unplugged the camera from soundboard. After a couple of songs, I raised the camera up to around 7 feet. This is the reason for the sound quality shift and all the moving around of the camera. I thought this opening song was worth keeping, even though I hadn't got the camera well positioned until a song or two later. Monty going to provide me a soundboard of the show so that I can sync it to my video later. Their is a slight echo in the audio because it's indoors, but I think it is still worth viewing this music legend. I have close to two hours video of Doc. As you view Doc, I think you will be surprised at how remarkable he can play and sing at the age of 84.

The show was held at the Wildwood Springs Lodge just outside of Steelville. The shows there have a capacity of a little over 200 people. As you will see from the video, it was a pretty intimate setting as Doc, Richard, & Jack Lawrence sat and performed in front of the fireplace in the lobby.

What great people the Watson's are. I saw Richard (Doc's grandson) standing alone, up by the fireplace, and got a chance to chat with him for about 15 minutes. I was asking him a few things about Doc and one of the questions I asked, he wasn't sure of the answer. He said Doc was in a room just down the hall and I could go ask him. That gives you and idea of how really down to earth the Watsons are. I didn't take Richard up on it but that really impressed me knowing how open and friendly these folks are. Richard definitely made me feel more like a friend than a fan, as I talked with him. As you  watch Doc perform in the videos I shot, it will become very evident how nice these folks are.
