“I Would Not Be Here”
---John Hartford---

lyrics & tabs contributed by Alex Jestrab on johnhartford.com forum

(A)Well, I would not be here if I hadn’t been there
and I G) wouldn’t ‘a been there if I (E) hadn’t just turned
on (A) Wednesday the third in the late afternoon
got to (G)talking with George who works (E) out in the back

and (A) only because he was (G) getting off early
to (C) go see a man at a (E) Baker Street bookstore

with a (A) rare first edition of Steamboats and Cotton
a (G) book he would never have (E) sought in the first place
had he (A) not been inspired by a fifth grade replacement
school (G) teacher in Kirkwood who was (E) picked just at random

by (A) some man on a school board that (G) couldn’t care less
and she (C) wouldn’t a been a-working if (E) not for her husband

who (A) moved two months prior, to work in the office
of a (G) man he had met while he (E) served in the army
and (A) only because they were in the same barracks
an (G) accident caused by a (E) poorly-made roster

mixed (A) up on the desk of a (G) sergeant from Denver
who (C) wouldn’t been in but for (E) being in back

of a (A) car he was riding before he enlisted
that (G) hit a cement truck and (E) killed both his buddies
but a (A) back seat flew up there and spared him from dying
and (G) only because of the (E) fault of a workman

who (A) forgot to turn screws on a (G) line up in Detroit
cause he (C) hollered at Sam who was (E) hateful that morning

hung (A) over from drinking alone at a tavern
be (G) cause of a woman who he (E) wished he’d not married
(A) he’d met long ago at a Jewish Bar Mitzvah
for the (G) son of man who had (E) moved there from Jersey

who (A) managed the drug store that (G) sold the prescription
that (C) cured up the sunburn, he (E) caught way last summer.
