Natchez Whistle - John Hartford 1978

I transcribed this song from an old Flying Fish LP - Headin' Down Into The Mystery Below to the MP3 file your listening to. jkh

After reading the posts below, I couldn't help but figure John was touching us again through his music and might very well be involved in the posts. At any rate Bob's original post and the follow ups energized me to develop this page. By the way, if you listen closely, I believe John changes 'whistle blows" to "whistle moans" some of the times. jkh

Bob wrote:

I have two questions about the lyrics of NATCHEZ WHISTLE:

NATCHEZ WHISTLE starts out as:

"Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow.
Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow.

Well, she blowed so low and she blowed so sweet,
I was layin' in my bed on Too Do (?Spelling?) Street.

Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow.
Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow.

(Chorus)
Somewhere in the rain out there over by Algiers,
Or maybe ghosts and the noise of trucks winding through their gears.

Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow.
Well, I thought I heard that Natchez whistle blow."

Etc., etc., etc.

1) What city was John in when he was, "layin' in my bed on Too Do (?Spelling?) Street."?

2) Where is Algiers found on a map? State? Near which river? What major town?

Thank you.

Ken Cornetet responds:

Tolouse street. It's in new Orleans.

About a year ago I was lost driving around New Orleans, looked up, and found myself on Tolouse. Got a little misty eyed thinking about one of my favorite Hartford songs.

Than Dirk Ellis responds:

Algiers appears to be a suburb of New Orleans across the Mississippi from Tolouse St.

Than I respond:

Yet another piece of John's life experiences born out in lyrics and brought to our attention many years later by a simple question. I love that song. Think I'll put it on the "Front Porch" so we can once again hear that "Natchez whistle blow".

Thanks for the query.

And Jeff Mankin responds:

Driving to work today and i noticed a street sign i never noticed before.  I have been passing this sign for 3 1/2 years but never noticed the name until today.

How wierd that I noticed the street named Natchez on the same day you all are talking about Natchez Whistle.

Just had to share

I followed Jeff's post with this to finalize the post stream:

I assure you, it was not a coincidence Jeff. John still touches our hearts and souls in many ways.
