The cover page of a book insert from a record album John gave me

John used this record and book when he first started learning the banjo. It didn't turn out to be his style but it was enough to get him started I guess. As John tells in one of his songs, he nearly fell over when he first heard Earl Scruggs playin' the banjo and of course that is the style John took up. Through the years, John created his own style but was greatly influenced by Earl Scruggs.  I will tell you more later about his friendship with Earl. I hope some of you got to see John do his banjer tuning number at one of his concerts. He's the only person I've known that could turn "tuning an instrument" into a song and great entertainment. I'm pretty certain that he never recorded it but perhaps it is on one of the many archives amongst the "Goodledays" members.
